made a date yesterday, traveled 45 minutes on the NYC transit system to the provider's hotel. texted him i was in the lobby and was told i neeed to make a deposit. weird. and the deposit had to apple pay. no other options. lol. seriously. texted photos of the hotel lobby and was told i'm a time waster. sigh. 45 minute trip home. who's the time waster. then he had the nerve to text a tirade because i refused to pay the deposit. dear lord.and then a friend of his started texting me about how grotesque i am...a new low.

If I am going directly to a providers house, I do not tip because they are keeping 100% of the profit. For me they are clearing a decent rate per hour and lotion or oil is not that expensive.

If I am at a spa I would tip 20% but that is because I know they do not get all of the money and they are paying for that space.

You should not have tipped and if you brought to their attention that you paid $200 for a 55-minute massage, you should have been offered a refund.  Next time stick to one hour.  You didn't seem to notice the difference and save yourself some $$$ toward your next massage.

No. I ask their price for their services and I pay that.

    I don't agree.
I stayed at a small hotel in Barcelona where the doors were closed at midnight. If you were out late (as most people are) you were supposed to ring thr bell and the attendant would come unlock the door for you.
Knowing I had likely woken up the young fellow I said thanks and tipped him.
He threw is back at me.
I've had other instances where desk clerks or service people outside of the restaurant industry look at me like I'm crazy when I tip for small accommodations that to me go beyond the standard of their job title.

Actually in Italy it is generally not appreciated (perhaps "offensive" is a bit too much) for the owner of a business to be tipped, for example a Hair Salon even if he/she cuts your hair.

The culture is to tip employees for personalized service, not a business owner who sets his own prices.
Many people will tip a masseur at a spa after paying the spa for the published rates.  Many people do not tip a massuer who owns and operates his own studio or makes house calls, as he selected his own price for the services rendered.  I use that same guideline in Europe.  I tip a sex worker at a brothel, because I paid the bothel a set rate before hand.  But I do not tip a sex worker I hire from an online ad or meet in a sauna, because the worker sets the price for what he is offering.
But by all means, give money or gifts to your heart's content in any situation on any continent (except Asia) and no one will consider you rude.

For what its worth....I haven't met him but know a guy who hired him for years and would drive hours to Cleveland to see him.  It sounded like he's a good guy and a lot of fun.  He's definitely not new and has been around for years.

In some cases also depends on how doable the client looks.
    Not everyone gets special treatment.

Medin reacted to Jamie21 in What does Erotic Massage Include
Yes this is highly regulated. The Association for Sexwork Knowledge (ASK) has a pamphlet that stipulates the exact content of an erotic massage.
The pamphlet describes that all erotic massages must include at least 3 touches of the client’s genitals (and the final or 3rd touch has to keep hold until the client climaxes or the time runs out). A minimum of one nipple must be tweaked and at least one ball gently cupped or caressed. If the client has a non standard number of nipples or balls the masseur has to ensure that 50% of the total ball / nipples available have to be touched.
Clients with a preference for bum work should indicate this either verbally or by parting their legs wider than table width. If the client does this then the pamphlet requires that the masseur insert a lubed finger (spit acceptable if no lube is available) past the first knuckle.
The pamphlet is called Hire for Intimate Massage. In short it’s the ASK HIM document 😉

This topic has come up many times.  The real answer is that there is no "agreed upon" or standard definition.  If you want to know more about what a specific masseur offers, you need to ask him  and/or check what his clients have had to say about him.

Totally unprofessional and annoying. How can anyone expect a tip after an incident like that? And then to go so far as to contact you, hound you, for a tip.
Others may feel differently but I rarely tip. If the provider wants to make $250 - $300 an hour then charge $250 - $300 an hour. Don't charge $200 and then expect a $50 or $100 tip. If the service is truly exceptional, then I will give a tip showing my gratitude and appreciation for the great service. Otherwise I pay the agreed upon rate.

    1) checking your phone
    2) disclosing info about clients who reviewed you
    3) advertising you are manly but are effeminate in person (nothing against the latter, just truth in advertising)
    4) unkempt place with prescription medications all over
    5) asking to be paid upfront (deposits included)
    6) cameras ...
** have encountered specific masseurs and escorts for each of the scenarios above LOL

I once booked a massage with a masseur at his home, without checking much into his set up or professionalism. I was young and naive, and this was before I actually joined the profession myself (call it my research years).
I turned up at the address given. It seemed ok. The masseur answered the door (I’d seen no pics of him, only a description and an outline of his services). He didn’t match the description but I was too scared to walk away…so I went in. He was very friendly, indeed he was delighted to see me.
I’ve written in more detail about it before so I won’t relay the whole story but the following behaviour occurred:
    - Using his loft (attic), a windowless cramped space accessed from the bathroom by a pull down loft ladder as his massage space. It didn’t quite have the right ambiance.
    - Letting me know, mid massage, that his wife would be home soon and I wasn’t to worry because she couldn’t get up the ladder…
    - Talking almost all the way through about how he wasn’t really gay but he liked massaging guys whilst he was naked.

The massage was mediocre, the ending wasn’t very happy and his wife called up from the bottom of the loft ladder if I’d like a cup of tea.
I didn’t return to him. The tea was too weak.

Medin reacted to Zimby in Ageist gay masseur ad in L.A.
Why do you feel the need to publicize this when the provider is already doing this?  Anyone that looks at his profile and can read English can see this guy for what he is.  Honestly.. this post will probably drive business to him.  You've just given him attention and publicity with your rant.

I see you keep bringing in racism to your replies along with ageism.  Please note... they are not the same and are in no way equal isms.

    Take a breath.

    Does ageism suck?  yes.
But this is an unregulated field of work.  How many clients don't want to to hire someone that is older than X years?  Why do you think so many providers "age-shave?"

So you insult the guy's looks (so mature) when in fact you probably thought he was good-looking at 1st because you looked at his profile.  I doubt you were inspecting profiles to report for various "ISM" infractions.

So.. what is your plan of action to fix this problem?

Medin reacted to d.anders in So many bad reviews
A lot of people believe they are good at something when they are not. A sexy photo can get someone in the door, but it can't keep someone coming back. Ultimately, a customer can't know for sure until he tries for himself. Given the cost of massage, it's great we have a resource to test the waters.
I once had a friend who wanted to do massage. He insisted he had a natural gift. He seduced me into trying him out. He had the most peculiar touch, with cold, clammy hands. I didn't know how to say anything without severely hurting his feelings. I went ahead and told him he should never touch another naked body. He was devastated. There's no taking that moment back. We're no longer friends.
