The problem with going above 5000k is that everything becomes blue-ish. It's a harsh, unflattering light.

Good for reading, yes, but it makes a room look like a doctor's office.

I was just identifying those who are synonymous with MCM design on a mass-known level.

I totally agree about Neutra's work. He was amazing... As were John Lautner, Purcell, Gruen (and that beautiful bank), A Quincy Jones and others. Palm Springs attracted major talent.

I lived down the street from the Sinatra house for a number of years, and walked my dog past it regularly. It had become rather shabby, but I understand that the renovation (which seemed to go on forever) has been very successful.

Yes, it is and it's a beautiful small compound. I stayed there last year with a group of friends.

The best part about it is that it's been meticulously kept. It's like taking a gigantic step back in time.

I once stayed at the Merv Griffin estate in PS. That is a beautiful, expansive property:

It's amazing that Kauffman built two great houses - the Neutra and FL Wright's Fallingwater.

Of course, Philip Johnson once said that Frank Lloyd Wright was among the greatest architects of the 19th century, but that's a different story.

When I think mid-century modern, I think of the actual designers who made the movement a classic: Saarinen, George Nelson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jacobsen, Knoll and Corbusier (among others). These were the artists who created a look that has since survived, thrived and reintroduced itself to a new generation. Palm Springs has been done a fantastic job of not only appreciating it, but respectfully preserving what they have. I admire that... It's not an inexpensive thing to do.

Clearly, we differ in what we'd seek for a retirement setting, but if PS floats your boat, I say more power to you

I agree with a lot of what you're saying.

The only decent thing (to me) about PS is the architecture: They preserved some beautiful homes and the mid-century modern aesthetic is one I really like.

I agree with the majority of what you say. Particularly about the mid-century Dinah Shore/Bob Hope aesthetic. However, there are also the palm trees and mountains ringing PS that are particularly beautiful. If I recall it was hard to go to a restaurant after 9 pm but my culinary tastes are pretty bad any way. The one thing that stood out for me is that there were some guys who provided some great sex. PS here I cum.

I guess that is all relative. From here, those are average long haul flights, nothing like the Australia to US flights. For me, get on the plane, go to sleep and wake up for breakfast prior to arrival.

I'm not sure whether Qantas economy, coming around every two hours with another snack was a good or bad thing.

OK two things to correct here. First Cuenca is not the capitol of Ecuador QUITO is. Second the law in Mexico not allowing foreigners to own land within 35 miles of the ocean is long gone. I know many Americans who own their homes and condos in Puerto Vallarta. I don't know about the 35 mile limit from an international border but I can't imagine anyone wanting to live anywhere near the US/Mexican border.

In all this talk about retiring to Mexico, do keep in mind that anything (roughly) 65 miles from a border or 35 miles from ocean is considered the restricted zone: A foreigner cannot own, outright, their property and must setup a real estate trust through both a Mexican bank & attorney to hold the title.

Those are extra hurdles I'd be unwilling to jump over in figuring out where to invest my nest egg.
