1. Beverley Bass was the first woman to be a captain on American Airlines. She was a check captain on an American B777 flying CDG-DFW on 11 Sep 01 and hers was one of the aircraft diverted into Gander. In Gander for the 10th anniversary she was interviewed by the playwrights and later invited to the premier of Come from Away. She was stunned to discover at the performance that she was of the characters portrayed in the musical. This is an interview with her aired this morning on her life in aviation, that day and that musical. She will be in Melbourne for the opening in July. https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/beverley-bass/11060672
2. With all this discussion, now I've gone off and checked out your website!
3. I knew there would be providers (and clients) far more able than I to debunk this apparent New Theory of Sex to which all escorts needed to adhere. Thank you @hypothetically, @Benjamin_Nicholas and @SundayZip for stepping up to the plate.
4. Yes, I did, thanks. And in Vegas. And I had a good few days in LA.
5. Both the test postings worked for me.
6. If you're outside the US (or RM thinks you are) you can see the comments in both rent.men and rentmen.eu.
7. Sorry, yes I realised that, it was more to welcome you back to posting here!
8. What @azdr0710 said in post No 11, pointing your to a proxy server/vpn. The review text is there, but not visible to readers in the US. @sydneyboy and I are in Australia so we can read them, but for US users work arounds like Azdr's are necessary.
9. Juanita is the ABC news reader in Sydney.
10. Welcome back to the forum Josh!
11. I'm sure it's not the only place it happens, but there are restaurants in Sydney that require a credit card number to book a table and they bill no-shows.
12. Well, that was fun. I'm now safely home, still 23° today and much the same tomorrow (1 May) but that won't last. The 13½ hour flight went quickly enough despite (in the words of one of our forum colleagues) not drinking enough in the airline lounge at LAX. I want to thank everyone who made the weekend so pleasant, our hosts @Epigonos and @Oliver, @David-SF our host on Friday, the 'cool kids' at InnDulge and everyone else who attended the various festivities. It was another memorable occasion. I greatly enjoyed renewing old acquaintances and making new ones. You'll no doubt be relieved to learn that I managed over the rest of my stay in the US not to drive on the left-hand side of the road again, although a couple of kilometres of roadwork with alternating traffic on a two lane road, where they had me driving on the left almost reset my brain to 'keep left'. I enjoyed driving to Las Vegas and on to Los Angeles, and had pleasant stays in both cities. On the day I was flying out I saw that @Brian Kevin was arriving in LA that day, but there was no time to arrange to meet even for a coffee.
13. I've noticed my message count doesn't change when I send private messages, and that my status changed when the message total ticked over a relevant number. From that I'd say private messages aren't counted.
14. I did a very @azdr0710 sort of thing today. I went and sat to eat one of their burgers under one of the umbrellas outside the In-n-Out Burger joint just near LAX and watched aeroplanes landing and taking off.
15. And to add to @Gadfly22's reply, a light year is a distance not a period of time, so 'If a star is 1,000 light years away ...'. If here is an alien 850 light years away, they could be able see that Notre Dame Cathedral was being built but they wouldn't know about the fire for another 850 years.
16. It's well to remember that the antibiotic resistant bacteria that are being detected are most likely resistant strains of bacteria that would be present to some level anyway. So the risk that an infection would be difficult to treat has to be balanced against the relatively low chance of developing an infection at all. It's still dangerous but not immediately so. The bacteria will likely become part of a person's microbiome, so if an infection develops it would be more dangerous than if it had been caused by a non-resistant strain. The precautions @Epigonos suggests are applicable regardless of the resistance status of the bacteria, but they are directed mainly at pathogens exposure to which always causes illness, such as salmonella. Complete separation of cooked and uncooked chicken in the kitchen is the key, and washing it carries a risk of cross contamination, especially in a small kitchen where separate preparation areas aren't feasible. As always, thorough cooking reduces the risk, and resistant bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, not to heat.
17. I also posted this information in this year's Palm Springs thread, but I've repeated it here so it remains visible for the 2020 gathering. I asked the staff at Inndulge about their pricing (the other popular resort among those attending, Canyon Club, is cheaper), and they said that their rooms are sold at their standard rate from when sales start one year out. As the year passes, the prices may vary so lower rates will potentially be available for those who choose to, or by circumstances have to wait until later to book. They have free nights available, but it's for the seventh night of a stay, so not all that much help for most of us whose stays are shorter.
18. It won't change your decision, I know, but I asked about their rates before I left. Bookings open 12 months out, and at the start it's at their rack rate. There is variability over the ensuing year (so potentially lower rates to be had), but as I see it they're unlikely to approach the rates at the CC. Their free night kicks in for a seventh night (i.e. after six paid nights). They do have rooms starting at $99 in Jan/Feb and in summer, but that's not much help for us. So it looks like some of the cool kids will still be at the Canyon Club! Like others, I had a great time this year, so thanks to @Oliver and @Epigonos for all the work they've put in yet again.
19. Kosciuszko is the name of the highest mountain in mainland Australia. It is typically pronounced Kossi-osk-ow. In my lifetime the z was added to the spelling.
20. David, I would love to accept your invitation. I'll be at Inndulge so I should be able to get details from Eric, but if not I'll shoot you a message or call you.
21. In my rural area today E10 was 143.9c/l and diesel 149.9c/l ($US 3.87 and $US4.03 / US gallon respectively).
22. I haven't been able to nail it down exactly but it's clearly behind my local time (Australian eastern standard time). As near as I can work out it's UTC (but perhaps European standard time). (The way I've tried to work it out was to note how many hours ago a 'last on line' time was, and try to see when it trips over to a specific time.)
