Everything big-and-tall says has been my experience, as well. All the porn stars I’ve ever seen (Rafael, Dolf Dietrich, Mike Gaite, and many more) have been either $300 or $350. I’ve never paid $500. I’ve paid $400 to only 3 escorts, all non-porn guys, but only one of them (“TopRated Canada) was “worth it” in my opinion. My two cents. Cheers, gentlemen.

I've met many a pornstar/actor over the years and I've never been quoted $500 per hour ($350 has been the most, $200 the least). The most per hour I've been quoted was $400 from a non-porn actor. I did not see that guy.
A lot of people assume just because someone is a popular porn actor they'll immediately ask a lot more. Yes there are those that charge super high value (Cade Maddox comes to mind), but $500 and above has not been the norm, in my experience anyway.

I'll throw my two cents in for what it's worth..
When I come across an ad (like I did this morning - a new ad) with just a couple of faceless photos, I pass - no matter how well-written the ad is. The new ad in my area today had two photos of a body from neck to waist, in a tight tee shirt. Thanks, but I'll pass...
I'm hiring the whole person, not just the torso or the pecs. I want to see the whole package of what I may be hiring. When someone doesn't include more body shots and face pics, I assume they're hiding something. I pass.
Let's face it - if I'm looking for a car to buy online, I'm certainly not going to take a chance on the ad which only features photos of the driver's door and rear tire. I want pictures of the whole thing - at different angles.

I agree with what others have said. If you don't post a face pic, people may insist on seeing one before they take the plunge. I've made one exception to that rule because that provider had stellar reviews on RM and here. I didn't regret it, and I see this provider regularly. But, I'm not comfortable inviting someone over if I don't know who to expect.

I avoid this problem by always having cold bottled water on hand and sealed. I offer one to the provider and usually take one myself. 
I’ve never encountered a problem this way but I also vet my providers pretty carefully.

Most guys I've talked to charge $300/hour. Giving a $50/hour discount for booking multiple hours would be a smart move, as at least one hour would be split between chit-chat, getting ready to leave, and saying "goodbye, thanks for a great time, etc." It also saves the guy the time and frustration of winnowing through twelve inquiries to book four bona fide one-hour appointments. 

at $500 per hour - I’d rather fly to Barcelona & spend the long weekend in/out of Sauna Thermas.  Yes, it’s way more in total - but I’d rather indulge completely. 
$350 is my top ceiling in the US.  Beyond that it’s ridiculous, inflation or not.

Not charging sounds like an ethical decision and good customer service from the provider, given the situation.  Kudos to him.
I had a similar situation once with a provider who could not perform.  He also offered to not charge me.  I gave him some money right then and there for cab fare.  While I wouldn't hire that man again for me, I admire his business practice of not charging for a less than stellar experience.
A good lesson to learn from this is that with some forms of communication, less is best.  Especially don't send text messages when there is any negative or serious issues to discuss, as they can be blown out of proportion.
If I had wanted to see him again, I would have waited a day to let the negative feelings from the encounter cool off, and then text him to schedule the next appointment.  If I had no intent of scheduling with him again, I would just let it go and stop communication.
