In April 1900 the Automobile Club of America organized the first automobile race held on Long Island. It was the fourth auto race held in the U.S. and, according to The New York Times, the first 50-mile race run in America. In this image, crowds line the street to see automobile designer Andrew L Riker (1868-1930) cross the finish line.
