From the National Archives, these photographs from April 1918 document a World War I aviation recruit being examined at the Episcopal Hospital in Washington, D.C. Ray York (1933-2020), age 20 in this picture, is fresh out of the shower after winning the 1954 Kentucky Derby. Fellow jockey Eddie Arcaro (1916-1997), who won the Derby five times previously and came in 4th in the '54 race, helps to dry Ray's hair.
