  1. For a few hours over the New Year's holiday, Cathay Pacific mistakenly sold first class, lie-flat seats from Vietnam to Canada at a price of $675 round trip. Typically, those seats go for $16,000 round trip. (Yes, you read that right.)

Once the error was spotted, the airline fixed it. Airlines are not required to honor such fares. When they don't, they cancel any reservations made and inform ticket holders that they have to rebook their trips. In this case, because the gap between the correct and incorrect fares was so wide, most observers did not expect Cathay to honor the $675 fares. Today, Cathay announced via Twitter that it would:

Happy 2019 all, and to those who bought our good - VERY good - surprise ‘special’ on New Year’s Day, yes, we made a mistake, but we look forward to welcoming you on board with your ticket issued. Hope this will make your 2019 ‘special’ too!

  2. I saw the original production about 15 years ago. Would love to see this one and compare the treatment.

The original production? Do you mean that there was some previous film/theatre adaptation of this material? My understanding is that this series is based on a 2016 book.

As to the treatment, there's a unique feel to this series. Not that it's a brand new thing to combine elements of comedy into a drama, but it's done boldly here -- or maybe it's just, as the title says, "very English." Then, almost as a counterweight to the comedic overtones, there are moments of poignancy -- as, near the end, when Thorpe is asked, Why that man?, and images of other encounters flash through his memory.

There was a good piece about the series in THE NEW YORKER last summer. Worth a read ...

  3. … I have been noticing that in the last 4 to 5 years, physicians where I work, in particular, are taking far longer off for maternity/paternity than they ever have before …

Interesting to bring maternity and paternity leave into this discussion. Particularly the latter, since plenty of us here surely remember a time before the "radical" concept of paternity leave even existed. (And what would that be for? A man taking time off because his wife had a baby!!? It's a world gone mad!)

Anyway, in mentioning paternity leave, @Unicorn, you've made me wonder if you would have more readily accepted a female colleague -- rather than a male physician -- taking weeks off work for a mourning period after a stillbirth at 24 weeks? I suspect there are plenty of people -- still -- who more easily (more reflexively) understand a woman grieving for the loss of a wanted child, and needing time for emotional recovery.

But if this couple shared an eager anticipation for their lost child, it seems only logical that they now need time to grieve and recover together.

From a business perspective -- sure, there's real inconvenience to a circumstance like this. And I suppose there are still plenty of professional colleagues (in all sorts of businesses) who get impatient about men and women taking time off to grieve or to heal, to bond with a new baby or to care for an elderly parent.

I have been on both sides of that, so I abstain from passing judgment on anyone. I once grumbled way too much about a new colleague (in her 20s) who -- only a couple of months after being hired -- took off many days to be with her dying father, then three more weeks after he passed. She was paid, and nothing was said to her about this. A few years later, I was the beneficiary of a whole lot of consideration and generosity from colleagues --including this one -- when I took an extended time away from work. What goes around ...

  4. That is exactly what I tried to do when I was a newbie here, and never worked to me. I am curious. What browser do you use?

@latbear4blk, I have Microsoft Edge on a desktop and Google Chrome on a laptop. I have previously used the "copy and paste" approach to including an image in a post from either computer.

  5. … that rule ("the ability to upload pictures or other files to the Message Center has been deactivated," ) has not changed with the new version of the Forum software. It has been in place for several years.

So I see. My mistake. All I can tell you is that, previously, I could (and did) copy an image and paste it in to a post. It's the only way I ever posted a picture. Can't do that now. I thought that part of the TOS was new and explained the change, but apparently not.

  6. … We've never been able to upload pictures directly to the Forum. I'm not sure exactly what you were doing. Copy and pasting didn't ever work for me because you can't upload pictures here. What you can do is get the web address of the picture, and using the Forum software the picture will display.

That’s right - we were never allowed to post pictures directly in the Forum. That part of the terms and rules has not changed.

Hmmm. Well, if I was breaking the rules, I did it unknowingly. Sorry about that.

I was never a frequent picture poster, but when it happened, the only way I ever did it, or knew to do it, was to copy and paste, and that worked for me -- the images appeared.

(Since the new TOS specifically say, "the ability to upload pictures or other files to the Message Center has been deactivated," that would seem to confirm that it did used to be possible.)

  7. Can we please have the old version of the forum back? Who else liked the old version better?

I’m not a huge fan either, but maybe it’s just adjusting to something new.

For me, the old version was fine, and the new version (which looks more contemporary) is fine too. I think @nycman makes the essential point: It's just a matter of adjusting to something new.

I wouldn't have thought of saying it, and I wouldn't call it a problem, but I do agree with @AshburyGuy that the light blue type on white is hard on the eyes -- especially when the type is in a smaller size -- so, on the Home Page, for ex., not so much with headers like "The Lounge," "The Deli," etc., but moreso with the lists of members online and latest posts.

    I am not technologically savvy.

I'd say the same about myself (but admit that sometimes I just haven't tried hard enough to figure something out).

The one thing I don't yet understand about what's changed here is how to post a picture (although I see that other people are having no trouble with it). Whenever I did it in the past, I just copied an image from wherever and pasted it into my post. I see in the new TOS that this approach is no longer allowed …

"Uploaded images consume bandwidth, present certain technical challenges and often present legal challenges, too. For these reasons, the ability to upload pictures or other files to the Message Center has been deactivated. However, images that exist on other web servers may be linked in messages and the message center software will display the image if the server allows it."

… but apparently (and sadly) I am too techno-dense to understand the instruction ("images that exist on other web servers may be linked in messages and the message center software will display the image") on what we're supposed to do instead.

Anyone care to enlighten this poor Luddite?

  8. After what she did to Joan Crawford, why give Dunaway a shot at another Hollywood legend?

According to the announcement, Ms. Dunaway will star in a revised version of Matthew Lombardo’s “Tea at Five” …

Revised ? Or rewritten ? The first act of that play is set in 1938, when Hepburn was 31. Kate Mulgrew played it in her 40s -- not impossible on the stage -- but Dunaway is pushing 80. The audience will need to be seated in outer space if she has to pass for 31.

  9. [marylander1940] has been banished and reappeared on another site to bide his time.

He is right now ruining the boytoy experience.

    True to form.

And is driving us fucking crazy over there.

Did you guys (or should I say yinz) do something to make him feel unwelcome? Or do you suppose he was lurking here and discovered how you felt about him there? I admit, I got curious about how, exactly, he was driving yinz crazy and went to look, but the first thing I bumped into was his post announcing that he was taking a hike from there. Literally:

"Thanks for the short membership but considering how warm it is out there I'd rather go hiking (something we all should do more often default_biggrin.png) instead of posting on here."

Who'd have guessed!!? Ole marylander1940 thinks hiking is better than posting on an internet message board.

  10. @Avalon, in another thread, you mentioned that you have arthritis in your knees and that you are homebound. If the arthritis is the reason for being homebound, I hope you are treating it with more than over-the-counter Ibuprofen.

At a minimum, there are prescription anti-inflammatories that might give you more relief.

In addition, there's viscosupplementation -- hyaluronan injections directly into the joint. These provided enormous relief to my mother when she was in her 90s, felt it was too late for knee replacement surgery, but was determined to stay on her feet. The hyaluronan (there are different versions of it, different brand name) acts like a shock absorber, lubricating your joints to reduce osteoarthritis symptoms.

And then there's the knee replacement option.

Sorry if you've elaborated on your situation in other threads I've missed, and if this advice misses the mark, but I wanted to mention options that I have seen work, and say that I hope you are actively working with a doctor -- a specialist -- to deal with an issue as severe and limiting as you've described.

  11. An alternative theory to what's become of marylander1940:

    I'd still bet it's just a time-out … but remember those worries about Y2K?

Would computers be able to handle the rollover from 1999 into 2000 without going *!#blooey#!* -- disrupting lives, livelihoods, whole economies?

Everything worked out fine then, but maybe not this time … maybe the sheer volume of posts by marylander1940 has exceeded the M4M capacity and …

    *!#blooey#!*

Be careful, @Avalon. Be very, very careful.

  12. He must have pissed someone off.

Or at least made someone gnash his teeth.

He's not listed in notable members so my guess is that he may not be a member anymore

It's probably just a time-out. I noticed once when jjkrkwood was timed out that he was gone from the Notable Members list, but reappeared once the time-out ended.

  13. Cute, but a misinterpretation of my post. We didn't just remove straws from our lives, we do our best to eliminate all single-use plastics. We know it's a proverbial drop-in-the-bucket, but if everyone started demanding the elimination of single-use plastic, things might start to change in our economy.

Sounds like Forrest Gump and I offended you. It wasn't our intent. I'm in full support of eliminating single-use plastics … and enjoy an occasional chuckle.

  14. That's what I've been saying, girl needs help for her mental issues. People need to quit wanting to lynch her/make an example out of her just because of her political affiliation ...

No one wants to lynch her, @Corporate Shill. Most of us would like less public spectacle, not more.

Which would have been a good reason for not putting her back on the air to begin with. Where was your concern about "girl needs help for her mental health issues" back on March 27 when you started this thread and were looking forward to having her back on TV?

She didn't just get nuts. That didn't just happen.

Treatment, not television, would have been a better idea right along.

  15. This hits on just the reason that I’m happy the show has been cancelled. It was peddling the bullshit myth that Trumpism is fueled by economic anxiety.

Roseanne’s tweet that brought it all down was symptomatic of raw, vulgar bigotry — Trumpism’s actual fuel.

    BINGO!

As Morgan Jerkins put it the other day in TIME magazine:

Like the many newspaper and magazine features that have spotlighted the need for working-class white people to be further understood, Roseanne just served to further normalize the bigotry that gets dressed up as “economic anxiety.”
