  11. For a few hours over the New Year's holiday, Cathay Pacific mistakenly sold first class, lie-flat seats from Vietnam to Canada at a price of $675 round trip. Typically, those seats go for $16,000 round trip. (Yes, you read that right.) Once the error was spotted, the airline fixed it. Airlines are not required to honor such fares. When they don't, they cancel any reservations made and inform ticket holders that they have to rebook their trips. In this case, because the gap between the correct and incorrect fares was so wide, most observers did not expect Cathay to honor the $675 fares. Today, Cathay announced via Twitter that it would: Happy 2019 all, and to those who bought our good - VERY good - surprise ‘special’ on New Year’s Day, yes, we made a mistake, but we look forward to welcoming you on board with your ticket issued. Hope this will make your 2019 ‘special’ too! #promisemadepromisekept #lessonlearnt 3:01 AM - Jan 2, 2019
  12. You realize, of course, that it took more time and finger strength to write that post than to type PETER NORTH into Google? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_North_(actor)
  13. The original production? Do you mean that there was some previous film/theatre adaptation of this material? My understanding is that this series is based on a 2016 book. As to the treatment, there's a unique feel to this series. Not that it's a brand new thing to combine elements of comedy into a drama, but it's done boldly here -- or maybe it's just, as the title says, "very English." Then, almost as a counterweight to the comedic overtones, there are moments of poignancy -- as, near the end, when Thorpe is asked, Why that man?, and images of other encounters flash through his memory. There was a good piece about the series in THE NEW YORKER last summer. Worth a read ... https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/the-very-english-politics-of-a-very-english-scandal
  14. Interesting to bring maternity and paternity leave into this discussion. Particularly the latter, since plenty of us here surely remember a time before the "radical" concept of paternity leave even existed. (And what would that be for? A man taking time off because his wife had a baby!!? It's a world gone mad!) Anyway, in mentioning paternity leave, @Unicorn, you've made me wonder if you would have more readily accepted a female colleague -- rather than a male physician -- taking weeks off work for a mourning period after a stillbirth at 24 weeks? I suspect there are plenty of people -- still -- who more easily (more reflexively) understand a woman grieving for the loss of a wanted child, and needing time for emotional recovery. But if this couple shared an eager anticipation for their lost child, it seems only logical that they now need time to grieve and recover together. From a business perspective -- sure, there's real inconvenience to a circumstance like this. And I suppose there are still plenty of professional colleagues (in all sorts of businesses) who get impatient about men and women taking time off to grieve or to heal, to bond with a new baby or to care for an elderly parent. I have been on both sides of that, so I abstain from passing judgment on anyone. I once grumbled way too much about a new colleague (in her 20s) who -- only a couple of months after being hired -- took off many days to be with her dying father, then three more weeks after he passed. She was paid, and nothing was said to her about this. A few years later, I was the beneficiary of a whole lot of consideration and generosity from colleagues --including this one -- when I took an extended time away from work. What goes around ...
  15. If only! … I promise you, I would be using them for better things than copying and pasting images on an internet forum!
  16. @latbear4blk, I have Microsoft Edge on a desktop and Google Chrome on a laptop. I have previously used the "copy and paste" approach to including an image in a post from either computer.
  17. So I see. My mistake. All I can tell you is that, previously, I could (and did) copy an image and paste it in to a post. It's the only way I ever posted a picture. Can't do that now. I thought that part of the TOS was new and explained the change, but apparently not.
  18. Hmmm. Well, if I was breaking the rules, I did it unknowingly. Sorry about that. I was never a frequent picture poster, but when it happened, the only way I ever did it, or knew to do it, was to copy and paste, and that worked for me -- the images appeared. (Since the new TOS specifically say, "the ability to upload pictures or other files to the Message Center has been deactivated," that would seem to confirm that it did used to be possible.)
  19. @MikeBiDude, thanks very much for that reply. I appreciate it.
  20. For me, the old version was fine, and the new version (which looks more contemporary) is fine too. I think @nycman makes the essential point: It's just a matter of adjusting to something new. I wouldn't have thought of saying it, and I wouldn't call it a problem, but I do agree with @AshburyGuy that the light blue type on white is hard on the eyes -- especially when the type is in a smaller size -- so, on the Home Page, for ex., not so much with headers like "The Lounge," "The Deli," etc., but moreso with the lists of members online and latest posts. I'd say the same about myself (but admit that sometimes I just haven't tried hard enough to figure something out). The one thing I don't yet understand about what's changed here is how to post a picture (although I see that other people are having no trouble with it). Whenever I did it in the past, I just copied an image from wherever and pasted it into my post. I see in the new TOS that this approach is no longer allowed … "Uploaded images consume bandwidth, present certain technical challenges and often present legal challenges, too. For these reasons, the ability to upload pictures or other files to the Message Center has been deactivated. However, images that exist on other web servers may be linked in messages and the message center software will display the image if the server allows it." … but apparently (and sadly) I am too techno-dense to understand the instruction ("images that exist on other web servers may be linked in messages and the message center software will display the image") on what we're supposed to do instead. Anyone care to enlighten this poor Luddite?
  21. Ah, the support peacock is back. The great threads never die.
  22. After what she did to Joan Crawford, why give Dunaway a shot at another Hollywood legend? Revised ? Or rewritten ? The first act of that play is set in 1938, when Hepburn was 31. Kate Mulgrew played it in her 40s -- not impossible on the stage -- but Dunaway is pushing 80. The audience will need to be seated in outer space if she has to pass for 31.
  23. You can't blame his parents for that. They named him Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. The parents had their own peculiarity in this area -- they were both named Shriver. (Cousins, I think. Like FDR and Eleanor.)

  25. Here's a link to the TOS page -- https://m4m-forum.org/help/terms (or, it's at the upper left of this page) -- in the column on the left of the TOS page you can find out about trophies. Enjoy the forum. Welcome.
