It is just remarkable how pervasive it is. Perhaps as a gay man I had no idea how widespread the phenomena is even though I did have a great idea of how little regard men held women. And to a certain extent I did understand and feel the fear that women felt from straight men. In a different way but to a certain degree. I think (for myself anyway) there was not the same pervasive sexual predation among the gay community. I know that it must be there and, of course, there has already been Kevin Spacey, Denny Hastert, etc., etc., but perhaps because there did not seem to be a physical safety fear that is rampant among straight men and women. And perhaps in many cases out gay men have not been among the elite (of any type, political, business, entertainment) so that it could not occur in the same way.

I worked in the legal system for many years and the one thing that I learned is that people always see things in different ways. That is why there is fact finding and due process. For the law there are courts in which judges and juries hear the evidence and decide what happened. In the private sector there are going to have to be a complete revamping of human relations departments (if they don't already have it) so that there are committees and hearings that administer due process. It is going to take some time and a lot of money because many businesses (large and small) don't even have human relations departments. So I also think that some of what the women are saying is their interpretation of a situation but a LOT is simply powerful men taking advantage of their power. And now the chickens have come home to roost.

I believe that eventually the ship rights itself. The adults in the room realize that not everything is black or white or that you can mete out the same punishment for every accusation. There are various degrees of impropriety and they have to be decided upon appropriately. The problem will be (and perhaps this is what perpetrators want) is that everything becomes so overwhelming that it seems that nothing can be corrected. I think that some in Congress and in business are doing the smart thing. They are holding off making certain decisions while they swiftly put a credible process in place so that there is fairness to the system. Moreover, while this is happening what really must go on is that we must accept the fact that it is the culture itself that much change and that will be done in very subtle (and some not so subtle) ways. Unfortunately that will be a very long haul.

I think that these very public cases are just the beginning and the media is informing the public about the those cases that are the most apparent. This is a very good thing because it will both show who caused the damage but more importantly force us to set up a process to deal with allegations. Not every allegation is true. However, we as a society have to make sure that the "accusers" can air their grievances and feel safe about the things that surround those grievances, e.g. physical and job safety. At the same time we must begin to set up processes to protect those who are accused. While we have given it a start (a very, very small start) it is so pervasive that it is going to take decades to make small inroads into breaking down the barriers. A good start would be more women in the upper echelons of power in both government and business. And much of the problem exists in our American culture writ large. Girls and women are treated differently and open to much less opportunity. All that has to change. Having a self-professed sexual assaulter as the country's president does not help but finally airing a bit of the dirty laundry in Hollywood, business, and government does. All hands on deck.
