It might have been true. Look at the following article from 1993.
A NEW APPRECIATION FOR TOILET WATER
Eve BeckerCHICAGO TRIBUNE
A new cologne that makes it possible to get intimate with celebrities. More intimate, we think, than most of us would ever want to imagine:
It's made from the sweat-yes, sweat-of stars.
"Fans want more of stars. They want a piece of the action," says George Gordon of New York's Pheromonics, Inc., and Starclone creator.
Country music singer Sammy Kershaw is the first star to sign. A 2-ounce bottle of cologne ($18) for female fans of "Haunted Heart" is available at Kershaw concerts or by calling 1-800-96-SAMMY.
Naughty by Nature and country singer Tracy Byrd have shown interest, Gordon says, but they have yet to commit to having pads sewn into their performance clothes.
It's from these pads, which are packed in dry ice after the curtain comes down and are shipped to a Denver facility, that the sweat is distilled and bacteria removed. The distilled solution is then sent to a fragrance house and mixed with alcohol, water and floral extracts.
What words come to the minds of the unsuspecting sniffers of the first eau de perspiration? Sweet, cloying, musky, floral.
Just one word from the suspecting: Disgusting!
