I taught Spanish for years and my students always complained that Spanish wasn't logical like English. I would then put up some of the following:

To - Too - Two

Read - Reed - Red - Read

Fast asleep

Dead tired

Wide awake

Etc., etc. After awhile they got it. As a second language English is a total bitch. In English grammar the exceptions are frequently more common than the rule.
