RIP Penny Marshall

I was shocked when I received the news alert Tuesday that Penny Marshall passed away. Here’s the CNN story.

She and Meathead grew up across the road from each other. She was in the last building on the odd side of Grand Concourse (#3235), he was in the last building on the even side (#3224). I always thought those were interesting-looking buildings, not knowing who had once lived there.

 

3224 is a triangular building that takes up an entire triangular block. It has a set-up like some older fancy buildings in The Bronx, Brooklyn, & Queens. It has a central address, but several sections, each with their own entrance accessed through a central courtyard. Usually there’d be more than one place to enter the property, but as security concerns grew, they’d be gated off.

 

If you look at the street view just to the right of the entrance of 3224, you can see through the locked gate that there are a couple of covered entrances visible in the courtyard. The building’s intercom is on this gate, which was not a part of the bldg originally. If you follow the street view around to the middle of E. Mosholu Pkwy S. there is another gate marked 3224 which can be accessed by tenants with a key, but there’s no intercom there. You can see more inner entrances in the courtyard.

 

An interesting thing that happens in hilly areas (The Bronx has a lot of hills) is that buildings can have more stories on one side of the block than the other. Since Mosholu is lower than Grand Concourse, there are basement apts along Mosholu, each with their own entrances to the street. To the right of the gate you can see doors marked BD & BE. To the left of the gate you have BB & BC, along with the medical suite BA.
