A pleasure! We should talk a little more about science on here specially now a days!

For anyone who skippped out on science class. And yes, at some point the sun will become a black hole. But before then, it’ll become a red giant and fry the earth. Hopefully by then, time as we know it will have ceased to exist lol.

But one thing I still don’t understand sometimes: if it takes 1,000 light years for a star’s light to reach earth, how do we actuallt know then what stage these stars are really in?

What if the sun and stars as we know it, are in different stage than what we are currently seeing??

Apparently you skipped out on science class (spelling too! :p). Whether or not a star becomes a black hole depends on its mass. Our sun is way too small for that. Actually the chart you posted says exactly that. Look at it again.

Hopefully by then, time as we know it will have ceased to exist lol.

If you believe the big bang theory (or watch the TV show) time will go on for many billions of years after our sun has burned itself out.

We don't. We only know what stage they were in 1000 years ago (or however many light years away said star is). Don't lose any sleep over it.

And to add to @Gadfly22's reply, a light year is a distance not a period of time, so 'If a star is 1,000 light years away ...'.

If here is an alien 850 light years away, they could be able see that Notre Dame Cathedral was being built but they wouldn't know about the fire for another 850 years.
