Generally speaking, for low-risk sexually active adults, the recommendation is comprehensive STD/STI testing annually. That includes anal and throat swabs (if they are receptive for penetrative oral or anal sex), urine and blood draws, and visual inspections. This is what any responsible exclusively heterosexual or lesbian sexually active person should be doing every single year unless they are in a rock solid monogamous relationship.

Everyone else who is sexually active should be more frequent because anyone having sex with men who have sex with men are automatically at least medium to high risk. I have been reliably and happily married to my wife for decades. I have a long term guy on the side who says he's exclusive except for his female partner. I get tested every 6 months for everything. I have my vaccinations: HepA/B, HPV and meningitis.

Escorts that we are talking about are an even higher risk group. Not only are they men who have sex with men, but many of them engage in high risk behaviors like partying, condomless sex, and a high number of different people. For them, every 6 months would be an absolute minimum. Every 3 months is much better. Even monthly may be useful, but they also need to be very aware of the false positive and false negative rates of the tests they are taking. They also need to be very aware of their bodies to detect even subtle changes because something like 60% of men don't show major symptoms when they have many major STD/STIs.

For HIV prevention, PrEP and condoms are your friend. Know that there are already PrEP resistant strains in the wild but they are rare.

Get informed about the risks. Make your own decisions about what you're comfortable with and have fun.

Just wondering what’s the common practice out there... how often does an escort get tested for hiv and other stds?

As others have pointed already every person makes his own decisions when it comes to an unregulated industry

Guys who are on prep usually have to get tested before getting a new prescription. The test includes all STDs besides other information about how the drug is interacting with their bodies.

How often do you get tested for HIV and STI’s? Equally, if not more important of a question.

Escorts usually have more sex than clients with more sexual partners.

I know local escorts who go to Whitman-walker three or four times per year even if they have no symptoms.

Kaiser, in the SF Bay Area has it's PrEP patients on the honor system; we're expected to have tests run every 3 months, and we get a 3 months prescription in the mail; but there's no enforcement of having had the tests immediately prior to the refill. In San Francisco, *one* (1) nurse-practitioner was responsible for following up 3,000 patients, when I started. It's a good idea, and I think most people do it.

But why would you get tested if you did not have sex-just to make it a habit??

Yes. Also, every test has a false negative and false positive rate. While it's highly unlikely, there's a small chance a person's test results may be incorrect. A good habit or routine of regular testing is a best practice for a responsible adult who's sexually active.

If you want to learn more, get fancy and ask your doctor about the sensitivity and specificity for the tests being ordered the next time you visit. ;)

I actually commend the guy for regular testing, regardless of his sex activity.

STI’s and HIV aren’t necessarily “time stamped” and symptoms of either could show far after the sexual activity that transmitted an infection to you occurred.

A poster said this about escorts: “ Not only are they men who have sex with men, but many of them engage in high risk behaviors like partying, condomless sex, and a high number of different people.”

Ironically I find this statement true about a lot of gay men who have lots of sex, free of charge....

take a look at any app or dating site and you’ll see for yourself.

What’s ironic is that sex workers probably take heed to testing and treatment far more than your average joe who’s just whoring around for free.

More men overall need more testing period.

Exactly. I think an escort has a lower chance to have an std than a regular guy. I know several guys on Grindr that they don’t test because they are afraid of the outcome ?

Std's- Next day after pus shows up.

That's incredibly flawed logic since the majority of men are asymptomatic for most STDs and STIs. The best practice is a regular consistent full panel of tests. The frequency should depend on the number of sexual partners and the variety of risks a person engages in. For MSM who are already a high risk category, a bare minimum of annual comprehensive testing is recommended.

All MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) are a high risk category. They absolutely should be getting comprehensive testing every year. Escorts are high risk too because of the number of sexual partners, the relative anonymity, etc. They should be every 6 months or quarterly or even monthly if they're very sexually active. If a man who has sex with men hooks up regularly, they're effectively an escort who isn't paid, so yes, they should be tested more frequently.

That's not true. A professional escort who takes their health seriously probably has a lower chance, but that's because they're responsible. I've met and seen plenty of escorts who take an incredible number of risks. That's why things like PNP can be such a red flag because it shows a level of risk taking and potential poor decision-making that may be concerning.
