This could have been taken in China, as HMS Otter was stationed there from1900 to 1916. The previous HMS Otter had been broken up in 1893, and the man on the left is wearing a collar that looks Edwardian. I have to remind myself that these men were drafted into military service just like other waring countries did with their men. Discovery or refusal would have meant death in the camps. The ceremony took place in a flat with the blinds drawn. The grooms are shown kissing, cutting their wedding cake and opening presents. The subjects remain unidentified. The people who took these photos never got to see them because the pharmacy that developed them refused to return them. The owner thought that images of men kissing, dancing with each other, having a marriage ceremony were indecent and obscene.
