In the category of underrated, I nominate Dali's Episcopal Palace in Astorga, León, Spain. Dalí was a painter, not an architect. From the Wiki article, apparently Gaudí quit the Episcopal Palace years before it was finished, and another architect completed the project. Maybe that's why the Episcopal Palace is the only Gaudí work I like, because Gaudí's over-the-top style was moderated by another architect. I admire La Sagrada Familia for how different it is. Anyone can recognize it instantly because it looks like no other church on earth. But judging just the aesthetics, I still think its fugly. + azdr0710
I visited La Sagrada in 2017 during my one and only visit (so far) to Barcelona.......as expected, lots of tourists and construction on the very tight piece of land.....having studied architecture for two years in college, it was a bit of a bucket-list destination......was absolutely amazed there aren't (more??) tragic accidents with all the wandering tourists and heavy construction going on.....they still have a couple tall towers to finish......always thought it'd be fantastic to have the exact final day of construction on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's tragic death - June 10, 2026 good-looking guy...... + Charlie
+ azdr0710
as an aside to my Gaudi post just above, I noted that directional signs inside the airport terminal at BCN were first in Catalan, then English........then Spanish! Underrated is Independence Hall, which is right in my back yard. It's interesting how small it is, and yet it stokes emotions when viewing the rooms/tables and chairs as they were in 18th century. Wow - I had the complete opposite reaction to La Sagrada Familia. For me it was like stepping into a fantasy novel, and the colours cast on the walls by the stained glass windows seemed otherworldly to me. + Charlie, + bigjoey, eRutt and 2 others
Brokara
It's not in my town, but I read that deep in the province of Cantabria is the Altamira Cave, one of the best preserved sites with prehistoric cave paintings. EastbayMike
National Palace of Pena in Sintra. What a horrible waste of time! Sintra has a lot to offer. Don't waste your time in line and shuffling through the rooms at the palace. Better spent outside hiking the grounds and enjoying the views. marylander1940
Underrated Colonia del Sacramento - Wikipedia and just across a 25 miles wide river from Buenos Aires. From the top of defensive walls of the city I was able to see my hotel (Sheraton) in Buenos Aires. Later on flat-Earthers started using that example as a way to prove their theory. Just kidding. I do see how most others may not like it. In fact, perhaps that’s one of the reasons I do love it so much. I can spend hours wondering the grounds and admiring the different angles. To me the building is very organic, alive, and fascinating. I can understand if someone says it's not to his taste, but this basilica is undeniably unique and impressive. I don't see how one can call it "over-rated" (in fact, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site). Of course de gustibus non est disputandum, so I can't argue with someone who might find it gaudy, Gaudí, or even ugly (though I'd disagree). But to say it's not worth seeing is off-base in my view. It’s a “wonder of the World” … nothing like that will/can ever be built again~ Even if you don’t care for the style, it’s an architectural feat of genius~ A lot of the color you see in there is natural light illuminated thru stain glass windows~ If it’s symbolism points of merit one is looking for, Goudi was hit by a bus before it was finished and the people themselves continued to work toward its completion~ This isn’t just a kookie guy with a cool idea. He motivates and influences an entire country and an ideal~ Goudi himself has historical importance in Spain but, also on a human level for all people~ There is a lot going on with FS and Goudi~ Not simply the architecture but, also the potential of one human being and the many that follow his dream~ He is a hope and pride of many people~ Don’t underestimate that~ + nycman

Archaeological sites are a specialist interest. Persepolis is most likely, for Westerners not just Americans, an unknown rather than underrated site. Given the US government's hostility to travel to Iran, it is likely to remain largely unknown to that audience. If I were to go there I would lose my access to visa waiver travel to the US, not something I am willing to forego just yet. I can remember Persepolis being one of the locations the Shah used for his celebrations of 2500 years of the Persian Empire. When I googled it I discovered that it was when I was still in high school (1971). Old I am! Luv2play and + Charlie
