samhexum
Nasty Nestor Cortes came within 5 outs of a no-hitter today and got a no-decision for a career high 7 1/3 innings and 103 pitches (one off his career high). (1H, 0 R, 4 BB, 11 K). Sherlock Holmes' great-grandson Clay faced one batter & got a DP for the win and Tracy Chapman's identical twin brother Aroldis nailed down the save. samhexum
Mr. Kate Upton is perfect through 4 versus the Twinkies tonight. 43 pitches. 11 of 12 first pitch strikes. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) Mr. Upton walked the first batter of the 5th, but Gio Urshela hit into a DP on the next pitch. No-hitter through 5. He'd be the 3rd man with 4. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) Another walk, but he's through 6 on only 66 pitches. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) The former Yankees are doing their bests to help out. Gary Sanchez just ended the 7th on the 76th pitch. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) The former Yankees are no longer doing their bests to help out. Gio got a single with one out in the 8th. So, like Nasty Nestor yesterday, Mr. Upton can only manage 7 1/3 hitless. (And before you ask, @WilliamM , these are Mr. & Mrs. Upton:) https://celebsfap.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/kate-upton-nude-_001.jpg https://fish-m.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/28140547-8786-fish-m.com.jpg Edited May 11, 2022 by samhexum just for the hell of it

Korey Cluber, who'd been off to a great start, gave up 8 runs on 11 hits through 3. It was just about this time last season that he no-hit Texas then went on the IL shortly thereafter. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) Detmers through 6 on 64 pitches. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) Detmers through 7 on 83 pitches. An error upped his pitch count in the 7th. One more out before it ends, I guess. Ironically, Mike Zunino, one of the worst hitters in the game, bats 2nd in the 8th. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) Detmers didn't get the memo, and is through 8 on 94 pitches. UPDATE: (UPtonDATE?) He did it! 108 pitches. Oh, and BTW... baseball's biggest weather nerd is back to being the best player in the game. samhexum
So... only a month into the season and it looks like most of the playoff teams are already obvious. NL: Mets, Dodgers, Brewers, Giants and 2 of Padres/Cards/Braves. AL: Yanks, Rays, Angels, Astros, the Central champ, and either the Jays or the Central's 2nd place team, who might get in by slaughtering the Royals & Pussy Cats Tigers. What say you? samhexum
Deja vu all over again... Seven members of the Guardians coaching staff are in MLB Health and Safety Protocols following an apparent COVID outbreak. Pitching coach Carl Willis will serve as acting manager in this weekend’s series in Minnesota. Per Mandy Bell of MLB.com, those in the protocol include bench coach Demarlo Hale, hitting coach Chris Valaika, assistant pitching coach Joe Torres, first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., third base coach Mike Sarbaugh, and hitting analyst Justin Toole, as well as manager Terry Francona. Only Francona and Hale are confirmed to have tested positive for the virus. While the Guardians’ coaching situation does put the league into uncharted territory as it attempts to navigate the risk-reward of playing games in the midst of intra-team (or, in this case, intra-staff) outbreaks, it doesn’t come entirely as a surprise. MLB’s postponement of yesterday’s game against the White Sox due to COVID concerns — its first of the season — indicated a level of uncertainty regarding the scope of the outbreak sufficient for the commissioner’s office to step in. It remains unclear if any Guardians players were exposed to the virus, though Jesse Rogers of ESPN did report (via Twitter) that positive tests were “mostly” confined to coaches and traveling staff. I refuse to believe this is turnaround that will result in a wild card birth. They started so badly and put themselves too far behind in a league split into haves and have nots. They don't have the time or talent to even pretend to contend. That being said, there's potential for the line-up to be not awful and Castillo-Mahle-Overton is a decent top of the rotation, so it would not be shocking to see them play .500 ball (or close to it) the rest of the way until they trade Castillo and/or Mahle. Mr. Upton started out with 4 hitless against the GNats today, though it took him 81 pitches. The Reds lost a game today in which they gave up no hits. Fireballing rookie Hunter Greene held the Pirates hitless through 7 1/3 when they removed him after 118 pitches after he'd given up his 4th & 5th walks. The reliever let in a run without a hit, and Greene got the loss. He joined Mr. Upton and Nasty Nestor Cortes in going 7 1/3 hitless in the past week. With a TJ surgery in his past, I'm shocked they left him in for so long. I thought he'd be out after 6 (93 pitches) or 7 (103). Resurgent veteran Jose Quintana shut out the Reds through 7 in that game. To add insult to injury for the Reds, it's not even an official no-hitter because they were the road team and only threw 8 innings. BTW, 2 singles in 7 shutout innings for Nasty Nestor (the 2022 AL Cy Young co-favorite - w/ Mr. Upton - at this point?), then a solo HR in the 8th to balloon his ERA to 1.35. His first time ever completing 8. The Yankees NEVER score for Jordan Montgomery. This happened all of last season, too. They scored 25 runs TH/F, then didn't score until the 8th & wound up with 2 in Montgomery's start yesterday. They've scored 16 runs in his 7 starts. His outings are usually short, as the games are tight and the Yanks have a terrific pen, but he's been quite good overall. They are 2-5 in his starts, 23-4 in everyone else's. The top 2 hitters in Miami's lineup today are named Jesus (Sanchez, Aguilar). Are they trying to court favor with the man upstairs? BTW, they put Jesus Lazaro on the IL today with a forearm strain. Jeez, that a lot of Jesuses (Jesi?) (Jesia?). Edited May 16, 2022 by samhexum just for the hell of it

samhexum
More than a month into the 2022 Major League Baseball season, some East Coast/West Coast history is being made. Both New York teams -- the Mets and Yankees -- and both Los Angeles teams -- the Angels and Dodgers -- are on pace to win 100-plus games. But even more historic: All four teams are in first place in their respective divisions -- the first time that has happened in MLB history.
