Hey it'll actually be here before you know it! They are going to be doing the opening ceremony on the River Seine. The competitors from each country will be in a boat going along the river with spectators along the river banks and on the bridges. They are anticipating there will be 600,000 spectators to see it. The preview illustration in the article looks spectacular.

I've been tossing up whether to post this here, as it's about football qualification for the Olympics, or in the football world cup thread as it's about the continuation of Australians' infatuation with the national women's team we saw during the world cup a couple of months ago.

Anyhoo, Australia is playing a qualification round with Iran, the Philippines and Taiwan, in Perth. The three Australia games were scheduled to be played in a 20,000 seat stadium, and they quickly sold out. I saw an interview with the Iranian coach who said that her team had never played in a full stadium before. (Since you asked, the Iranian women wore hijabs of sorts and, wrist and ankle length kit.) The Australia-Philippines match was moved to the new 60,000 seat Perth Stadium and quickly sold out there as well. Six months ago, the idea of selling that many seats to a women's football game here, and in Perth rather than Sydney or Melbourne, would have been unthinkable, but here we are. It remains to be seen whether it will last, but the enthusiasm was expected to end after the world cup. We continue to waltz with the Matildas.

China, the USA, Britain and Australia tend to dominate each games. It's a little boring.

it's been the US and Russia competing but the US solved that by disqualifying Russia from competing. The Olympics should not be political. Making peace for games was the original intent of the olympics. Sad it's devolved into politics.

There's a reason why doping is NOT allowed in sports and yet conspiracy theories all over again..

Russians doping scandal = blame America....

The use and trafficking of performance-enhancing drugs damages the integrity of sport.

The opening ceremony is a week today starting at, as has been a trend of late at the time of the games, so in Beijing it started at 20:08 local time, London 20:12 local time, Rio 20:16 local time, Tokyo 20:20 local time and Paris 20:24 local time

Which is all very well and good, but what happens in the 2060 Summer Games because 20:60 would be 21:00 local time

Anyone plan on watching the opening ceremony tonight? Hoping for more shirtless flag bearers perhaps? 😉

The Tongan chap originally causing a stir in 2016 at age 32 did not qualify this year but is in Paris currently, I presume due to celebrity status or simply has funds.

May need to tune in to aquatics for the shirtless crowd.

Do keep an eye out for this year’s Soccer-Gate’s revised Canadian Women’s defending Olympian champions’ garb for the Walk of Atonement portion of Canada’s part in the opening ceremonies parade. They may even be stripped of their 2021 win over Sweden.

Grindr is limiting location services at the Olympics to protect LGBTQ+ athletes

CNN

People looking for love with an Olympic athlete could have a difficult time this year: Grindr, the LGBTQ+ dating app, has disabled some of its location-sharing features to protect athletes from harassment or prosecution.

Some users noticed this week that they can’t use the “Explore” feature on the app at the Olympic Village in Paris, which lets people change their location and look at profiles.

That’s by design, Grindr confirmed. The company explained in a blog post that for an athlete who isn’t out or comes from a country with strict LGBTQ+ laws, using the app “can put them at risk of being outed by curious individuals who may try to identify and expose them.” The app can still be used by people in the Village, even though some location services will be disabled.

Roughly 155 LGBTQ+ athletes are attending the Olympics in Paris, according to OutSports, which is a small fraction of the more than 10,000 attending the games.

The company is making other changes for the Olympic Village: For example, profiles default to revealing how far away someone is with the “show distance” feature. That feature can be enabled but will default to “off” for users in the Village, and other venues. Grindr said that change is to “help athletes connect without worrying about unintentionally revealing their whereabouts or being recognized.”

During the two-week event, Grindr is also letting users in the Village send unlimited disappearing messages or unsend messages for free. Those are features typically the app charges for. Sending private videos and disabling screenshots have also been temporarily disabled if used in that radius.

“Our goal is to help athletes connect without worrying about unintentionally revealing their whereabouts or being recognized,” Grindr said, adding that it made similar restrictions at previous games.

Grindr started clamping down on its features during the Olympics after 2016, when a heterosexual Daily Beast writer reported on using Grindr to meet athletes in the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro. The story, which was deleted, drew angry accusations that the writer had outed gay athletes, whom he didn’t identify by name but had descriptions of them.

If I were an athlete competing there I'd wanna wait until after my events are done for any sexual fun. The first priority is winning a medal not hooking up.

IMHO the opening ceremony was a nice change of pace. It wasn't perfect, and the pouring rain surely did not help. But they get extra points for putting together a different and thought provoking ceremony. Highlights for me were the beautiful light show off the Eiffel tower and the sight of Serena Williams almost going overboard. And one couldn't help but be inspired by Celine Dion singing at the end. What that poor woman has gone through with her illness is truly sobering. BTW they hung the Olympic flag upside down. O well.......
