Luv2play
I always enjoyed her music which was popular in North America and Europe where I lived at the time. Besides that she achieved stardom in films like Grease and Zanadu. The NYT claims her music video of Physical was the first in history. Sad to see her go at a relatively young age. maninsoma
There were music videos long before Physical. What an odd claim to make, unless they mean that it was the first video album (and I'm not even sure whether that's true). Olivia was a special talent. I still own most of her albums. Luv2play
So I checked again and the Times states it was the first video album to hit the market with video clips of each track on the album. It also won the Grammy award for best video album in 1982. + WilliamM

mike carey
It's been a sad time for Australian music, Archie Roach, a great indigenous musician also died just over a week ago. I was in Hawai'i on an exchange posting in 1987 (ish) when she opened one of her stores there (in the Kahala Mall). With an Australian Army and an RAN colleague, I was invited to the opening to add some extra Australian 'colour' to the event. MscleLovr
I feel it’s a shame that most of the obituaries of her don’t mention her charitable efforts for cancer research. She was a tireless fundraiser for years and she attracted millions of dollars for cancer research. I hope the cancer research centre that bears her name in Melbourne, Australia will continue to honour her. n2guysnatl, KK913, samhexum and 2 others 4

curt gregory
So sad about ONJ. I’m surprised that no one has mentioned her appearance in “Sordid Lives” - what a hoot! I only saw one obit mention her marriage to that handsome Matt Latanzi. Whatever happened to him, BTW? And does anyone remember that movie where he did a naked swim in a pool? Yes, she (as well as everyone else) was great in Sordid Lives. What a funny script and a funny cast.

I always remember a scene he did (with Jacqueline Bisset) where he’s standing while she sits on the edge of a bed to unzip his jeans… Luv2play, thomas and + azdr0710

+ nycman
She was amazing. When I was a late teen, my best female friend started dating my best male friend. I was crushed, and at a loss to explain to the straight world why I was so devastated. Everyone assumed I was secretly in love with the female. In fact, it was the guy. Then late at night I was riding with an older male co-worker to make the midnight deposit at the bank. He saw how distraught I was, and said, "don’t worry, I know what you’re going through". Then he popped ONJ’s Soul Kiss tape into the cassette player and played "Culture Shock". We never talked about it, but his act of kindness meant the world to me. Her music got me through that, and many other of life’s traumas. Thank you Dame Newton-John. RIP.

Boink
She's at least the third important woman in John Travolta's life to pass from breast cancer. After Diana Hyland and Kelly Preston.

My purpose above was to add Archie to the two of whom I thought the average US reader would have been aware. I should have made it clear that my sadness was in having a third prominent Australian musician die within such a short time.
samhexum
The director of the iconic movie musical “Grease” revealed Tuesday that the production team almost cast a very different Coach Calhoun. Randal Kleiser — who directed the film at the urging of the film’s co-star John Travolta — said that they nearly hired “Deep Throat” actor Harry Reems as Rydell High’s athletics teacher, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s podcast “It happened in Hollywood.” “[Allan Carr] actually hired him,” said Kleiser referring to the film’s screenwriter. “And the studio said, ‘No no no. You can’t do that.’ And so they had to fire him.” Executives at Paramount Studios were allegedly concerned that the casting of a porn star would hinder box-office numbers. This decision led to Kleiser hiring comedic legend and TV pioneer Sid Caesar to fill the role of Coach Calhoun. In the film, Calhoun helps Danny (Travolta) in his quest to impress cheerleader Sandy (played by the late Olivia Newton-John) by attempting to put him on a sports team that ends with Danny attempting to fight members of the basketball, baseball and wrestling teams. “Allan felt so bad that he gave Harry $5,000 out of his own pocket, but the poor guy was very devastated. Because it was his moment to move from porn to the real upscale world,” said Kleiser. BSR
