marylander1940
It's an app that monitors your online activity and sends "blurry" images of suspicious sites to your trusted "victory partner" in the fight against porno! Who would you pick to be your partner? If you google "covenant eyes" and click on news you'll see why all of the sudden we normal folks are aware of the existence of this app. Screen Accountability™ | Covenant Eyes WWW.COVENANTEYES.COM What people do online impacts their lives offline. mike carey
The idea of this sort of app is that addiction to porn is a moral failing rather than a psychological condition (or a source of innocent enjoyment and not a real 'problem' at all). Guilt places the onus on the addicted person to overcome their own addiction, with the subtext that if they can't they are 'intrinsically disordered' or some such. The apps and the assumptions on which their developers rely carry a not insignificant risk that the person seeking (or being persuaded to seek) a 'cure' will, if they fail see only one other possible solution to their 'disordered' state. pubic_assistance, + Charlie, MikeBiDude and 2 others 2
MaybeMaybeNot
The assumption is actually that porn is evil and anyone who accesses it is addicted. This app would help keep people accountable. The actual term is accountability partner. marylander1940
wsc
There are all manner of addictions. Some may only be and may remain minor or occasional indulgences while others may lead to excessive or even obsessive behaviors. If an addiction begins to interfere with daily functioning - such as sleep deprivation, failings in work or family responsibilities or obligations, financial well-being - it's time to seek help. There should be no religious test or standard for mental wellness. But an addiction that becomes debilitating to any degree should be evaluated by competent mental health professionals, regardless of the nature of the addiction, in an attempt to control the effects of the addicted behavior. However, I have known several people who claimed to have been "cured" of a drug or alcohol addiction through a faith-based program or approach leading to a change in their behavior. I congratulate them for their success and give thanks with them, but do not disparage their faith in a supernatural agency. I don't believe in such a thing myself and would assert that the strength to overcome their addiction was already and only within them. But religious beliefs can generate strong emotions in a person and those emotions may move them in ways they couldn't move themselves without it; that's what emotions do - they move us. It's a matter of finding the right stimulus to elicit the desired response. And if faith produces the "cure," a good end is reached. Halleluiah? I'm not trying to model my life on some right-wing "Christian" notion of what's right and wrong. I discovered my Christian pastor watching porn. It wasn't a big deal. He taught me how to play beer pong (I never learned it in college). These things are compatible with our Christian faith. There are many more religions that frown on viewing sex (Muslim, Islam) . Back to the original post, I think I would want the app if I was addicted to anything on my smart telephone that was taking too much of my time and preventing me from living a full life with connections to real humans, which can happen with pornography or sudoku. Psychotherapy takes a LONG time to be effective. This might be meant as a tool to keep things from getting out of hand RIGHT NOW. Seems like a good resource if porn becomes a barrier to leading a productive day. I had a neighbor years ago who rarely left his apartment. When he died, they cleared out thousands of porn magazines and VHS tapes. Must have spent all day / every day whacking-off. + Vegas_Millennial, wsc and CuriousByNature 2
Rudynate
The new Speaker of the House uses the Covenant software - his accountability partner is his son. jeezifonly
It’s like “Covenant Marriage” and “Purity Rings” Puritanical moralizing, twisted beyond fuck-all. marylander1940
I think this app has nothing to do with addiction and more with being judgmental of those of us who watch porno. One more time, google "covenant eyes", click news and you'll see why we're talking about it. What's next? An app that doesn't allow you to go into an elevator with someone attractive? soloyo215
Personally I don't believe in porn or sex "addiction". It's all nonsense to me. I also agree that the app seems to have some kind of Christian flare to it, which is quite offputting to me. Even if I believed in the so called "sex addiction", doesn't look like that app is something that will create any long-term benefit. I wouldn't pick an app to manage that part of my life (if I evern feel like I need any kind of support agains something I like too much, I guess), leave alone picking a "victory partner". Chances are, I might end up f***ing the hell out of him. Hate the app, hate its premise, hate its approach. pubic_assistance and marylander1940 1

As soon as the public eye fell on her because of her husband's rise, she took down her website. It isn't known for sure that he's an ex-gay, but quite a few people associated with Exodus International have later come out as gay. It is common for someone as energetically homophobic as he is to turn out to be a closeted gay. So, I'm not being sarcastic - someone who hates gays as passionately as he does may very well be gay himself. + Just Sayin

No. Actually, I just got my COVID booster today, and my employer requires having the flu shot, so I got it too. I just do not believe in the so-called sex addiction. There are conditions like OCD that resemble behaviors that some addicts display, but it is a completely different thing. And, BTW, in no way, shape or form am I discouraging anyone who think or feels that is a sex addict to take care of themselves in any way that they see it fit for their situation. I'm not preaching nor trying to convince anyone about my views, which are only that, my views, In fact, have a few friends who consider themselves sex addicts, some of them go to therapy and (I believe) 12-step programs for sex addiction, and one of them I even consider part of my family of choice. I do not have a black-and-white mentality about it. I just have my own beliefs. 4 hours ago, BuffaloKyle said: Actually you are right. A counselor told me it's a compulsion rather an addiction. Exactly. And there are differences between those two.
