what do you mean?

i've not mentioned who it is. there are several well-known gay politicians: kolbe, gunderson, frank, that lesbian named tammy whose last name i can't recall at the moment, the list goes on & on. the person whose better half ran an agency could--or could not--be among these. even if he were among them, i'll never say WHICH of them he may or may not be.

i don't think i've been indiscrete. i simply mentioned that the boyfriend of someone high-profile ran an agency.

please explain the harm in that.

Actually, it's an old story. It was in the news a couple of years ago and I heard it even here in Canada. Hohum, so called US political sex scandals are soooo dull. ;-)

How can you surpass Prince Charles being caught on an unsecured cell phone telling his mistress he wished he was her (euphemism here so as not to distress our more delicate readers) "feminine hygiene product"?

Nothing beats the Brits in the distasteful decadence department. Americans are mere pikers. I guess we will just have to wait until you tuck a few more centuries under your belts.

I can only pray we can get rid of the monarchy before Lizzy kicks the bucket.

As to whose main squeeze was running an escort service out of the basement of their townhouse, that was Barney Frank. It was in the news, back when he was outed and given a hard time. I live all the way out in California and even I know that! :-) Barney notably went on to be re-elected over and over again, to the credit of the voters of Massachusetts. Same is true of some others who've been outed, or came out after being threatened with outing, including Republicans like Jim Kolbe. The electorate is a lot smarter and, on the whole, less bigoted than the Beltway crowd likes to think. That's one of the reasons Clinton wasn't impeached. Try as they might to drag him down in Monica's cum-stained dress, the public didn't think it was that important, and Clinton's job approval ratings remained high until the end of his term. His personal approval ratings, of course, were much lower, which demonstrates that our fellow citizens were able to distinguish between Clinton's private life and his public responsibilities, and decided they didn't care that much about what he did in private.

Outing someone (not on this site, of course) is always a tricky subject, but I think it's justified and newsworthy when a public official hypocritically hides his/her homosexuality while actively working against the interests of other GLBT people. At this point in history, issues of gays in the military, marriage rights, etc., are big subjects of political debate, and we deserve to know what influences the votes of our lawmakers. As to the hue and cry that their careers would be ruined if they're outed, the evidence seems to be to the contrary, although it certainly might have some effect on their personal lives. I don't want to know the specific gory details of what any of our Senators and Representatives do in bed, any more than I wanted to hear about Clinton and that cigar, but I think the mere fact of their sexual orientation is fair game. After all, we want to know every detail of their physical health, so how is this any more of an invasion of their privacy (which I agree they give up significantly when they seek public office).

As for escorts who might know Mr. Condit: Don't spill any beans on this board. Contact the DC Police (or your own lawyer, if you have one) and tell them anything you know that might help them in their search for Chandra Levy. Your confidentiality, at least at this stage of the game, is probably pretty safe if you talk directly with them. Remember, if anything in the current investigation were to lead back towards you, the last thing you want is for the police to come looking for you, perhaps with threats of being an accessory to something! It's much better to have been forthcoming and cooperative. On the other hand, I've also never heard anything about Condit being into men, so maybe this is all moot. By all acounts, he's a serial heterosexual philanderer. I can't believe his wife hasn't known, after all this time. Or maybe she does, and that's why she's stayed in Modesto instead of living with him in D.C. Oh, well, their problem, not ours!

Good advice, Trilingual!

One aspect of the Condit case is the fact that the DC Police Dept. is in charge of the investigation. The DCPD has been notorious for years in law enforcement circles as perhaps the most incompetent major city PD in the country (along with most of the rest of the government of our great Capitol). So even if you report possibly relevant information, it probably won't go anywhere, and will only cause you endless personal exposure, aggravation and grief, getting caught up in one of the worst managed police bureaucracies in America. So unless it is directly relevant my advice is not to call the DCPD.

Andrew Sullivan, bete noire to many for other reasons, has been on a crusade for quite a while to hold the DCPD up to the same necesssary and helpful level of scrutiny which every other large city PD in America enjoys. His latest bit, THE REAL CHANDRA LEVY STORY, is worth looking at: http://www.andrewsullivan.com/

I care about as much as with any celebrity/star/power-broker which in my experience this discussion is a major recurring event in gay life. There is a

thread currently in the Lounge discussing this very

topic. I guess I have 'unnatural' curiosity.

Take care, Les

1) the frank affair is TRUE!!!! i know for a FACT that the BF ran an agency.

2) clinton WAS impeached. he was not convicted. there is a difference. impeachment is leveling charges against an official & is done by the house of representatives. the senate then conducts the trial. if you want to be credible, please do some research & make sure your facts are correct.

DCB:

He was simply shortening DC Police Department to DCPD... is that such a terrible thing? Are we now to the point where even our acronyms must be correct??

Most of us choose not to make a point about spelling or syntax errors (even as egregious as capital/capitol). For whatever reason, Internet spelling and usage seems to follow it's own set of rules, which are considerably relaxed from those used for other, more formal communications.

You have a lot to offer here and I have frequently enjoyed your posts. But I suggest lightening up a little and giving your fellow posters a break. You'll live longer and be happier.

He's an escort. Escorts are to be held to a different standard of netiquette because they are pretty and make the rest of us happy. ;-)

Are you having a bad day DCEscortBoy? While you may feel it necessary to correct every little error you find and some of your corrections are actually useful, do you also find it useful to throw in a put down to those who made the error?

>it is the MPD (metropolitan police department), not the DCPD.

I think most knew what the author meant even if not EXACTLY accurate.

well, that was right before barney frank came out, and the reason he came out. in both dc papers more than once during what i thought was the last big gay/escort story in d.c.around same time was another, this agency run from a house that was supposedly doing funeral business, but was really agency. police seized all records, including names and credit card receipts.

it was the one when liddy dole's press aid and several people from pentagon, and i thing 1 wash post guy all used gov/company credit cards for this entertainment. liddy was sec of labor at time, and guy fired.

re: frank, guy lived with him some; frank wrote a letter on official letterhead for him to beat a parking ticket in alexandria; said he was on official business. that was hook that papers used, and then rest came out. was unsure of agecny angle, guy was escort and seeing others and using frank's residence to set it up. frank censored in the well of the House, and soon after, i think, was congressman from mass also who admitted to advances/whatever with male intern.

And all of this was printed in paper, so public record.

if there was another, didn't hear it.

i've scrolled down, but didn't read where u read it. Come across FFF.

i thought about that earlier in the week, but decided that he really was just a serial philanderor (spell, hard word)of women.that red headed stew was spunky though on Larry King. and her lawyer, said every way he could condit did it, without coming out and saying it. think they are both smarmy.

A brief reply to DCEscortboy.

Of course spelling counts. I did take civics. I hit the wrong key. Generally outside their own areas police departments are referred to by their municipalities + PD -- the reason being that many have "special" names that are more or less meaningless elsewhere.

Sorry about that. It was on Lucianne.com

However, she mentioned it on her site the day of my posting and her page changes daily.

Belatedly yours,

Escorts are held to a different standard of etiquette here because they are the only possibility for a lot of the posters here to have sex.

isn't "not exactly accurate" something akin to 'a little bit pregnant?'

it either IS or ISN'T correct.

i'm having a fabulous day actually. i feel that the corrections are warranted.

but i'm frightfully happy (and correct) as it stands!

the name of the police force is NOT District of Columbia Police Department. it IS metropolitan police department. all i did was correct an error. granted, my capitol/capital correction was a bit cranky, but the acronym correction was entirely valid.

OK, all escorts except Sean are held to a different standard (I'll let you guess why). }>

And for the record, I get more than my share of propositions.

If I may paraphrase a former Hollywood star, I don't pay escorts for the sex. I pay them to go away afterwards. :p
