So they're launching a marketing campaign to appeal to a gay clientele.

Notice board outside of JP's Cabaret (1681 rue Ste. Catherine Est, Montreal). Please take note of the beautiful snow lining the top edge of the notice board...

Not only the dancers.

This isn't so much different from the old L'Adonis, which had ladies' nights 3 nights a week (after 9 pm), if memory serves. But if the dancers are primarily interested in the female clientele, who cares?

The problem with JP's is that this attitude comes from the top down, the new owner sent a message to the gay community: WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU.

They didn't care for the staff (Manager, barmen, servers, DJ's, doormen) they fired, they fired EVERYONE.

They didn't care for the dancers, no dancers received advance notice, only some of the most senior staff did.

They didn't care for the customers, they closed the place for 5 weeks in the peak of the tourist season (from July 5th to August 8th)

I am going to tell you a story about an retired American friend of mine who now lives in Montreal: He went to JPs a few days after it opened, it was early in the night and there were just a few dancers visible on the floor. And he starts looking at the manager who he thought looked handsome. The guy replies: "The show is over there"

Ouch!, Since when it is a sin to flirt with staff in a gay bar? Oh, wait!! It's not a gay bar anymore!

Sometimes flirting with the staff is more fun than flirting with the dancers...or at least just as much fun. For one thing, the staff are sometimes a little more mature than the dancers and have got the flirting thing down pat, something that isn't always true of 19-year olds.

Cant say how happy I am to see this place fail miserably given the way the closing of Adonis happened. Fortunately Taboo has picked up the slack. It has essentially become Adonis - lots of the former dancers, and pretty much all of the former clients... including me! :)

Didn't go in to JP this trip - no reason to. But glad to see it's gasping for breath.
