This will probably sound harsh, but transfering old vhs porn to another format seems like a waste of time and money. A suggestion: take a few hours or more, if necessary, and go through everything you have. Select what you remember as THE best of the best and if possible watch it again. Will you really spend time watching this and/or others in the future? I doubt it. Keeping things we once enjoyed is a little like keeping an old pair of shoes we wore to a special occasion. It might bring back good memories but worth while giving up space and effort to? Doubt it but I know the "collecting syndrome" is hard to break.

Bite the bullet, pack up the lot and get rid of them.

Not harsh sounding at all and a reasonable approach. I am far from the type of person who has difficulty parting with things I've collected but no longer interest me, however many of the videos still interest me and bring me quite a bit of pleasure to watch. I doubt I will have the time or interest to copy everything but I do have quite a number that I do want to copy and keep (and quite a few don't appear to be easily found any longer either on line or in a DVD format to purchase). If the ones I have and still enjoy very much were in a more convenient format I would likely watch them periodically and certainly more than I do now, hence my posting here. So for me, it is a worthwhile effort

And thanks to everyone for the suggestions and ideas. I now have a starting point for doing some extended research and see what the best option for me will be.

Did you say harsh?

I always thought the purchase of porn to be a waste of money. I could never date a guy knowing he owned a porn "collection," especially in VHS format. Yuck!

The market is flooded with never-ending supply of new productions, and some of the more recent amateur stuff is far hotter than any studio produced crap from yesteryear. Unless archiving Falcon and/or the boys is your hobby, who on earth wants to see the same sex scene over again? In order for my cock to get rock hard, I either need love, a really sexy partner, or a new sex scene fantasy. A do-over never worked for me.

Btw, it's also rare that I will watch a (non-porn) feature film twice. It has to meet certain criteria before I do.

I say throw the useless shit out and don't waste another second. God forbid you suddenly die and someone else has to go through that crap.

he probably bought this stuff before DVDs existed and before the internet changed everything.....and I'll certainly volunteer to go through the "crap" if he dies

When's the last time you washed your hands?

I'm sure he did.

I certainly watched my share of porn in the 80's, and witnessed the transition from film to VHS. Who doesn't remember Falcon's, "The Other Side of Aspen?" Betamax was better than VHS, but there's no need to relive that story. Japan has had better luck with Blu Ray.

Many gay men stocked up on VHS porn purchases back then, and I never understood why. I thought the quality sucked, and many people knew VHS was not long for the world. In Manhattan, real estate is a premium: storing items you won't use everyday is also an issue. There were several rental clubs in the city that offered super cheap deals for monthly rentals. I belonged to one, and renting numerous tapes a month was much more practical and cost effective than buying them. So many movies really sucked, BIG TIME. Renting was a no-brainer.

For me, the enjoyment of a gay porn scene has always lasted about one orgasm. There are exceptions (sure, there were a few guys I could watch more than once) but their numbers are small. Pop music, after about four listens, bores the daylights out of me. Even though I like her, you can imagine why I don't own an Adele album. I rarely purchase pop music anymore, especially entire albums.

Meeting a guy who claims to have a porn collection sends negative signals my way. The thought of a guy masturbating all the time does not impress me. And there's the whole social-misfit issue that aggressive porn watchers don't like to talk about.

I've never been a big porn purchasers. I owned 2 on vhs. big guns and sailor in the wild. I think right now I own like 5 porn dvds and then I have over 300 dvd's and around 100 blu rays of general releases. I haven't bought a blu ray in 3 months I decided to end the collection with what I have. If something comes out I want to see more than once I can just go to red box.

I have to go with RH on this one. I rarely if ever watch a porn anymore, and I never watched them twice, and that goes for regular movies as well. I threw all those old tapes away years ago. I think transferring them is a waste of time and money. The new porn is far superior to anything from years past. In the last several years, I find myself watching porn very infrequently. I prefer the real thing to some fantasy on tape. Except of course at the request of young man that I might be entertaining for few days.

My porn days are way behind me along with other things that helped to enhance the experience....;)

I have been unemployed for about 6 months now and about 2 months ago I finally began going through the several hundred porn tapes I have. I have a cd/dvd player, and I put a new one in every day or so to decide if I should keep it or throw it out. I watch, or attempt, to watch each one to decide whether to throw the tape out or not. It has been a fascinating experience, seeing some retired favorites in their prime (Tino Lopez, Hakan, Enrico Vega), those who never seem to age (Arpad, Michael Lucas, Rocco Sifredi) and too many who are deceased.

Anyway I have disposed of over 70 tapes by putting them into a garbage bag which then goes into a Hefty bag....but since I am not buying new porn, over 30 tapes I watched I am definitely keeping along with my dvds.

VHS tapes may be outdated technology, but I really don't care since they still "work" for me. And believe me, some really stand the test of time, lol.
