I have traveled domestically and internationally with poppers in my checked luggage and in my carry-on bag, I have never had a problem. I just throw them in my toiletries kit. They get upstaged by the vials of insulin, the syringes, the bewildering assortment of prescription pills and the CPAP machine. Yes, poppers are illegal in Canada, which means you can't legally buy them there, but nobody is looking for them. Canada can get awfully picky at border crossings I understand, but I've had no trouble at airports.

The only place where you should avoid at all costs flying in with poppers is Japan. Whereas every country in which poppers are illegal you will get them confiscated and maybe will get a slap on the wrist, in Japan they will either put you in jail or put you on the next plane back home while being banned for many years.

Japanese street vendors used to sell poppers and magic mushrooms, and from one day to the other, jail and deportation.

Not quite true that Japan is the only place to avoid travelling with poppers. The UK, various EU countries and Australia take a hard line with offenders. And many international airlines forbid travel with poppers in checked bags and carry-on (as poppers can be highly flammable).

Yet I've seen all over Europe Poppers being sold at all Gay and Porn Venues. I don't use them but have seen them all over everywhere I've gone in the EU. My advice is to get them there and leave them behind when you leave.

I have traveled within the US and Mexico via airplane without any problems. Like @Despardo, I put them in my toiletries kit and have had them both in my carry-on and checked bags and never had a problem. It's helpful to remember that TSA is looking to make sure that you don't have explosives or weapons, so a little bottle of liquid mixed in with a bunch of other liquids and gels isn't going to rouse suspicion unless you're sweating profusely and looking around nervously.

If possible, I would always recommend getting them wherever you are going and then leaving them there, to reduce your own anxiety and the possibility of being caught and getting in trouble. Plus, there's nothing like a fresh bottle!

My contingency plan - in the event I am ever caught with them and it's a problem - is to claim they are to clean my leather harness that is also in my bag.

I've never had a problem tucking them in my toiletries kit, BUT i do know that if you are flying out of the Provincetown airport, they hand search all bags & there is a big sign saying that they are illegal.

Technically, the law is a LOT more complex than "they are illegal." Alkyl nitrites (the poppers family, if you will) are illegal to possess/sell/use for the purpose of personal consumption/use BUT they are legally possessed/sold/used for commercial purposes. This is why they are labeled as "room odorizers," "video head cleaners," and "nail polish remover." The PTown airport can threaten all they like (are they still doing that? it was 2011 when that post was posted) but - for now - the distinction exists and I think it would be highly unlikely there would be any punishment, just the bittersweet knowledge that someone out there is either scared of poppers or going to use your poppers themselves.

I don't use poppers but fly almost every week. I have precheck and have never had TSA open my bag and inspect my liquids and the times I've used small airports or airports overseas where precheck wasn't available I never had security inspect the liquids in the bag. As long as the poppers are in a bottle under 3.4 oz and fit in your quart size bag you should be fine
