Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856–1931) was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nudes, often featuring wreaths or amphoras to suggest a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. From a modern standpoint, his work is commendable due to a controlled use of lighting as well as the often elegant poses of his models. His cousin, Guglielmo Plüschow (1852–1930), also a photographer of nudes, helped familiarize him with the technical aspects of photography. Von Gloeden, whose innovations include the use of photographic filters and special body makeup (a mixture of milk, olive oil and glycerin) to disguise skin blemishes. scrupulously shared the proceeds of his photographic sales with his models.

The images by von Gloeden that garnered the most widespread attention in Europe and overseas were relatively chaste studies of peasants, shepherds, fisherman, etc. that downplayed their homoerotic implications. More explicit photos were traded "under the counter" and among close friends of the photographer.

Although he is now mainly known for his nudes, in his lifetime Wilhelm von Gloeden was also famous for landscape photography that helped popularize tourism to Italy.

Konrad Helbig

Konrad Helbig (1917-1986) was a German photographer, archaeologist and art historian. He is principally known for his black-and-white photographs of male nudes made during the 1950s and 60s. Inspired by Wilhelm von Gloeden, with a similar classical approach to his images, his photography has also been compared to that of Herbert List for its grace and vitality.

Can't these guys do just one thing with their life. :) (A man after my own heart. A fondness for Italians and Brazilians.)

George Rodger

George Rodger photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson during the liberation of Paris, 1944

George Rodger (1908-1995) was a British photojournalist noted for his work in Africa and for photographing the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II.

Rodger taught himself photography so as to have pictures to accompany the accounts of his travels written while he was a member of the British Merchant Navy. With the outbreak of WWII, he had an urge to chronicle the war. His photographs of the Blitz earned him a job as a war correspondent for Life magazine. He covered the war in West Africa extensively and then followed the Allies' liberation of France, Belgium and Holland.

Rodger also photographed the British retreat in Burma, and was likely the only British war reporter/photographer allowed to write a story on the Burma Road by travelling on it into China with special permission from the Chinese military.

In 1945, George Rodger was one of many photographers to enter Bergen-Belsen. His photographs of the survivors and of piles of corpses were published in Life and Time magazines and were highly influential in showing the reality of the death camps. Rodger later recalled how, after several hours at the camp, he was horrified to realize that he had spent most of that time looking for graphically pleasing compositions of the piles of bodies lying among the trees and buildings. This traumatic experience led to his conclusion that he could not work as a war correspondent again.

In 1947, Rodger became a founding member of Magnum Photos. He subsequently traveled throughout Africa and the Middle East, documenting the people and wildlife in these regions.

Tony Patrioli

81m0tJJB2kL.jpg

Antonio Patrioli was born in Manerbio, near Brescia, in 1941 and now lives in Milan. He began to take pictures as an amateur in 1965, choosing the male nude as his subject and using his lovers as his models. In the mid-1970s, he was given an opportunity to publish his photographs commercially.

"I began as an erotic photographer and I make no apologies for it," Patrioli says. Unlike other Italian photographers of male nudes, Patrioli explicitly, and from the outset, directed his work at a gay audience. He came out as a gay man in Homo, the same magazine that published his first photographs.

From 1976 to 1986 Patrioli produced images for this and other Italian and international magazines (especially in northern Europe). He took an interest in nude photos of a more artistic sort, initially inspired by the work of Wilhelm von Gloeden, "partly because von Gloeden was the only photographer of the male nude who was not banned in Italy at the time, partly because his fantasties coincided with my own. The physical culture photos from America seemed too far from the world ... I saw all around me."

Patrioli thus portrayed and documented the last stage of a particular Mediterranean culture that disappeared in Italy in the wake of the sexual revolution--young men who, although heterosexual, were available for homoerotic activities if they had no access to heterosexual ones. In Patrioli's work, they were always youths from the south of Italy, amused by the narcissistic game of posing for the photographer yet anxious about exhibiting their desirability to those who, according to the mores of the time, had no right to their bodies.

George Daniell

http://www.iphotocentral.com/Photos/VintageWorks_Images/Full/11146_George_Daniell.jpg

Self-portrait with camera and mirror, ca. 1955

American painter and photographer George Daniell (1911-2002) studied drawing at Yale University and at New York's American People's School and Art Students League. As a teenager, he began taking photographs along the banks of the Hudson River in and around Yonkers, where he was born and raised. In summer there were plenty of fishermen and bathers willing to pose. Eventually Daniell went farther afield -- to Glen Island, Jones Beach and Fire Island -- fascinated with the water and with the people on the beach.

After graduating from college, became a freelance photographer in New York City and Europe, taking some of his best known images of actors, artists and writers. These portraits appeared in Time and Life magazines (among others), and are represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Daniell photographed celebrities as and where he found them: a young Sophia Loren in a Rome movie studio, Audrey Hepburn on the set of "War and Peace," Tennessee Williams in Key West, FL, Georgia O'Keeffe on her Ghost Ranch in New Mexico and W.H. Auden smoking a cigarette and lounging in a doorway on the island of Ischia.

He described Loren as "the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," and O'Keeffe as "very nice and very warm" but an artist treasuring her privacy. After Daniell moved to Trenton, ME in 1960, he spent more time painting than photographing.

"Besides Stieglitz, of course," O'Keeffe said of her friend, "George Daniell is one of my favorite photographers."

Loomis Dean

Loomis-Dean.jpg

Loomis Dean (1917-2005) was a veteran LIFE magazine photographer who shot pictures of circus clowns, crown princes, Hollywood stars, Madagascar lemurs and SS Andrea Doria survivors in a five-decade long career. The son of an artist, he originally studied art at a local school where, he said, "I proved I could not draw." After discovering photography, he got a job as a photographer for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His first assignment for LIFE came in 1946. In 1960, he spent three weeks in Spain with Ernest Hemingway for an assignment on bullfighting, and in 1989 published "Hemingway's Spain," about his experiences with the writer. After LIFE folded in 1972, Loomis Dean worked on a freelance basis for movie studios and news magazines.
