What's your favorite fast food?

With rancor over rising fast food prices at an all time high, it’s easy to forget that not all states are California or New York.

Yes, it’s true, for example, that McDonald’s prices have nearly tripled in a decade in at least some cases, but in some parts of the country, you might hardly notice.

That’s according to a new study released by online coupon platform BravoDeal, examining which states pay the least for their quick service favorites — and which states pay the most.

Researchers chose four well-known menu items at four of the most popular chains — the McDonald’s Big Mac, a medium cheese pizza fom Domino’s, a chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A and a combo from Taco Bell, before digging in to find the statewide average price paid for each, Eat This, Not That! reported.

Three states in the Deep South topped the list of the lowest prices, with Mississippi taking the number one spot for affordability. Magnolia Staters, for example, pay an average of $2.99 for the classic sandwich from Chick-fil-A — far, far below the $6.99 being charged in some NYC stores.

Want a Big Mac in Biloxi? That’ll be an average of $3.91 — much cheaper than the $8.09 found at a McD’s in Massachusetts earlier this year.

Taco Bell lovers in Mississippi pay an average of $5.67 for a combo meal, data showed — in Alaska, you’ll pay just over $7 on average, possibly much more than that.

And finally, Domino’s — that medium cheese pie averages around $13.49 in the Gulf Coast state, while Seattleites might pay up to $16.99.

Arkansas and Alabama were number two and three on the cheapest states list, with Nebraska and Kentucky rounding out the top five.

And while the weather might be heaven, fast food prices are rather hellish in Hawaii, dubbed the most expensive state. There, a Domino’s pizza averaged $18.99, a Big Mac $5.31, a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich for $4.06 and a Taco Bell combo for $7.70.

New York took the number two spot on the list, with a $14.49 average for the pizza, $5.23 for the burger, $4 for the chicken sandwich and $7.58 for the Taco Bell combo.

New Jersey ranked number three, followed by California at number four and Maryland at number five.

The Golden State has been getting an outsized amount of attention over its fast food prices, as the minimum wage for workers in the sector rocketed to $20/hour.

“Hawaii’s position as the most expensive state comes as no surprise, given its remote island location, which drives up the costs of goods due to transportation expenses,” Marco Farnararo, CEO and co-founder of Bravo Savings Network told the outlet.

“However, what’s really interesting is the variety of price ranges we see elsewhere. From wallet-friendly Mississippi to the slightly more expensive areas such as California and New York, it’s eye-opening for anyone who loves a quick takeaway.”

Yes, this is true.  I live in Nevada.  Back around 2012, I stopped visiting McDonald's when I traveled to California, as their prices were noticeably higher than in Las Vegas (No $1 menu, soft drinks $3 vs $1 in the rest of the nation).  There is/was a Pizza Hut in Palm Springs that I no longer visit because the owner started adding a 25% "Doing Business in California Fee" to all orders (and the fee wasn't posted on the menu).

I found that when I visited both California and Hawaii this year, Mom-and-Pop-restaurants were the place to go for better food and better value.  But here in Nevada, the cost efficiency of the supply chain for chain-restaurants still makes them a good option for decent food at decent prices.

There is Shakey's pizza in Palm Springs I enjoy.  I admit it's the nostalgia that draws me back and it's located near where I stay.

Pizza Hut has abruptly shuttered 15 locations in the Midwest with more than 120 others at risk of closing down after the chain landed in a bitter legal dispute with a franchisee.

EYM Group, which owns and operates 142 Pizza Hut locations in Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Wisconsin, was accused of defaulting on millions of dollars in payments that were allegedly owed to Pizza Hut by a June deadline.

Pizza Hut abruptly moved to shutter 15 restaurants in Northwest Indiana on Friday, according to a report in The Times of Northwest Indiana, which cited social media posts by employees.

EYM has accused Pizza Hut of failing to modernize its menu as well as its digital ordering system — thus putting it at a disadvantage against the stiff competition in casual dining, including from Little Caesars and Domino’s.  EYM Group filed suit against Pizza Hut in March 2023, alleging a breach of contract.

Pizza Hut countersued earlier this month, alleging that EYM Group was beset by financial discrepancies and that it failed to make required payments — thus violating the franchise agreement.

After several defaults, Pizza Hut entered into a forbearance agreement with the franchisee last year.

Pizza Hut’s parent company, Yum Brands, reported last month that same-store sales at Pizza Hut declined by 7% in its most recent quarter.  In the US, Pizza Hut same-store sales dropped 6% — a stark decline compared to 7% same-store sales growth during the same period last year.

Shares of Yum Brands, whose subsidiaries include Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell, are up nearly 6% from Jan. 1.

Whataburger, a Texas staple, is really good. Burgers are a tad better than the other fast food giants. But the service is always so friendly. I like how they come around to your table to offer you ketchup and sauces. And generally the place is really clean. They do a few things very well and focus on them, which of course is the key to any successful business: Find your niche and stay there.

Celebrate National French Fry Day on July 12 with a free medium fry and a Whataburger from Whataburger! Simply download and use the Whataburger app by July 12. Redeem in-store, at the drive-thru, or via curbside pickup. Offer expires early on July 13. Don't miss out!

A Burger King by me instead of ketchup is now using blood in their meals! A worker injured his finger and got blood all over a woman's order and gave it to her in the drive thru like that. Her daughter luckily thought it was ketchup and not liking ketchup told her mom she didn't want it. That's when the mom saw the blood all over the food.

If I must do fast food out of convenience, or to satisfy a craving, my go-to is my local drive-thru fast food taco chain, TJ Tacos. They have the *best* adobada fries. I order there a few times a year.

Second choice, for once in a great while…In-N-Out!

My order:

(2) Double Doubles, protein style, no onion, no spread. No fries, drink, or anything else besides water. The spread makes me get sick.

during a supervised weight loss effort a few years ago, I told forum member @Epigonos that I can still go to In N Out, but I have to order my cheeseburger 'protein style' (wrapped in lettuce instead of bun) and with no spread.......being a native southern Californian, he was very familiar with In N Out, said he goes there regularly, and laughed at the thought of 'protein style'....."why bother?".......

Wendy's.

Former NBA player Junior Bridgeman might agree with you.  He was a good player for a decade or so and...

During the off-seasons of his playing career, Bridgeman worked at and learned the business model of the Wendy's fast food restaurant franchise. After retiring from the NBA, he invested in the franchise and eventually owned over 100 various Wendy's and Chili's restaurants, before selling in 2016.

His net worth is approximately $600 million and he's finalizing a deal to buy a 10% stake in the Milwaukee Bucks, for whom he was playing when his Wendy's involvement began, for a 'discounted' price of $340 million (the franchise is worth $4 billion).
